How to develop a daily creative practice that really works!

Art making can be a fulfilling source of self-care.

One of the most nourishing parts of my self-care is something simple, and powerful: a daily creative practice.

It shifts shape depending on the day—sometimes it’s writing, sometimes lettering, sometimes just playing with a new-to-me art supply or paint brush - all for fun. This ritual doesn’t just feed my soul—it supports my work too.

Like any muscle, creativity strengthens with use—and a little daily movement goes a long way.

But let’s be real: staying consistent isn’t always easy. Life gets busy, messy & unpredictable. So today, I’m sharing nine gentle principles that help me return to my creative practice again and again—without the pressure or perfectionism.

P.S. If you want visuals for these nine principle, visit this post, and save the images.

1. Keep it Simple

Start small, keep it simple. A few minutes, a ready made water color pan set, one paint brush, one pen or pencil, and a few simple paint strokes, or easy floral illustration can (and will) encourage you to keep going. Let it be easy.

2. Show up, imperfectly

we are all beginners at one time or another.Let go of what you think it should look like. Just begin.

3. Choose one focus.

Write, draw, paint—pick one. Minimal tools. Maximal permission.

4. Anchor it in your day.

choose a time and place that works for you. Make it part of your rhythm.

5. Define “enough.”

as in, trusting YOU are enough and have within you an artist who wants to come out and play. Also, set A time limit, a word count, a quick doodle—do what’s doable today.

6. Let it be fun.

as you create, discover & grow, invite Play into your process. Be creative,Explore. Allow joy into your process.

7. Commit in a way that excites you.

consider trying a 10- or 30-day challenge. so many are available on Instagram and Pinterest.

8. Release perfection.

Be kind & compassionate with yourself. Remember you’re human and that you’re developing new skills and practices.

9. Feed your creativity outside the practice.

Go on artist dates. Connect with others. Follow inspiration wherever it leads.

If you’ve been hearing a gentle whisper to creatively express yourself, allow this to be your invitation to gently come home to it.
